The tech that gives you total control from your phone

Modern automated gate kits have been specifically designed to be easy to control, and that’s typically through the use of dedicated remotes or integrated keypads. In the last few years though, another increasingly popular method of controlling automated gates has emerged – the humble mobile phone. (You may even be using yours to read this!)

The technology has come a long way in even just the last couple of years, and with more than 30 years of experience to our name here at Gate Auto, we’ve made sure to stay on the cutting edge of it! We supply a variety of systems based on mobile phone control, which you can find under our intercoms and access control section.

The way each one works can vary slightly from system to system, depending on what type of technology it’s built on. In terms of access technology controlled via your mobile phone, we supply two main types here at Gate Auto:

  • GSM (the Global System for Mobile Communications)
  • Remootio (an app-based system)

Let’s take a quick look at each of them in turn!

How does the GSM system work?

The first aspect to mention about this type of intercom system is that it requires a SIM card to function – either contract, or pay as you go. This SIM card connects to what’s called the GSM network (the Global System for Mobile Communications), which essentially allows communication between the intercom and your phone.

GSM systems broadly fall into two main categories – a GSM switch, or a GSM intercom.

  • A GSM switch is simply a switch for the gate that allows it to be remotely opened and closed. It offers no communication or intercom capabilities.
  • A GSM intercom on the other hand is a more advanced version of the same system, and offers a number of additional functions, communication options, and overall flexibility.

Both require a SIM card because the GSM system basically operates through the mobile network. With call-to-open functions, the system will reject your call so that you’re not charged every time you open your gate. However, if you choose a GSM intercom system, then when the intercom is in use then it’ll essentially function like a regular phone call – that’s why so many people prefer a contract.

The good news is that there are no premium rates involved (unlike some systems of decades past), so you don’t have to worry about any extortionate operating costs.

Setup, and granting access to visitors

When setting up your gate, the installer (including our team here at Gate Auto) can set it up to issue a warning if a connected phone is ever low on credit – it can be a very annoying problem to have otherwise!

Then, the administrator (that’s you) can program one or more numbers into the system, using the accompanying app. Whenever you get a visitor, they’ll press a button on the external panel, and the system will call the primary phone number you’ve set in advance. When that call is connected, you’ll have a choice of several actions – for example, you can choose to talk directly to your visitor via the intercom, or if you already know who it is, you can simply open the gate when they call.

If the line is busy on the other hand, or if there’s no answer, the system will move on to the next number in its list, and gradually work down them in sequence until either someone answers, or it exhausts all its options.

Opening the gate for yourself

This couldn’t be simpler – all you need to do is call the GSM system using its dedicated phone number. It’ll start by rejecting your call, which it does to ensure you’re not charged (especially if you’re using a pay-as-you-go SIM). Alternatively, you can open it using the app, which generates a text message to be sent to the system. When the GSM intercom receives that message, it opens the gate.

Granting people access themselves

If you want to give any visitors the power to gain access themselves on the other hand, like friends or visiting family, you can set temporary key codes through the app. These key codes will only work during predetermined times. Alternatively, if you want to give someone permanent access, you can simply enter their phone number into the app as we detailed above. (To do all this, you’ll need an admin passcode, which you’ll receive when you first set up your gate.)

The system also provides the option to ‘latch’ the gates, effectively leaving them temporarily unlocked so that your visitors can let themselves in (for example, if you’re expecting a delivery, or friends or relatives to arrive within a certain window). You can unlatch the gates manually by sending the system another text message. Alternatively, you can set up a timed message, so that the gates will lock themselves again after the pre-set time limit has elapsed.

As a general rule, the GSM intercom will set the gate in fully automatic mode to close – or in other words, they’ll close themselves.

The majority of the GSM systems we provide are manufactured by Videx, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of gate intercom systems. And as a trusted UK supplier here at Gate Auto, we’re proud to be able to offer its products at the very best prices!

How do Remootio systems work?

Remootio bears some notable similarities to GSM intercoms in that Remootio systems are all controlled via an app on your phone. However, one important thing to mention about Remootio is that it’s not an intercom – it’s a module for operating your gates through a mobile device. Again, there are two main options to choose from – hardwired or wireless.

A hardwired system connects directly to your router at home, and operates via the internet. You can open the gate from anywhere with the app.

A wireless system reduces the cabling requirements, but you need good signal at the gate for your phone to connect. Again, you can open the gate from anywhere with the app.

One of Remootio’s most popular capabilities is its geofencing feature. Essentially, the technology allows your gate system to automatically recognise certain phones, as long as they have Bluetooth active. That makes it a very handy hands-free option for opening your gate – which means you can walk or drive up to it without even having to take your phone out of your pocket. It’s the perfect combination of convenience and security, especially if you don’t think you’ll have a huge need for the extensive range of extra features offered by a GSM system.

What are the advantages of systems controlled via your phone?

This technology offers substantial benefits over traditional systems. For starters, it means you can manage your gate from anywhere in the world, giving you truly unrivalled flexibility. That provides you with significant control and convenience, particularly if you find yourself travelling frequently, or you’re responsible for managing multiple access points.

GSM and Remootio’s systems eliminates the need for additional handsets and associated costs, saving you money and allowing you to optimise your costs. On top of that, with the wireless systems there are obviously reduced cabling requirements compared to traditional intercoms, as there’s no extra equipment to install, so it’s both simpler and faster to get started. Additionally, GSM and Remootio’s systems are designed with straightforward programming options, ensuring that managing and updating your access control remains hassle-free.
